About the instructor:

Arsénio Nhacolo, PhD is the Director of Data Management and Statistical Analysis at the Manhiça Health Research Center (CISM) in Mozambique. He holds a Ph.D. in Medical Statistics from the University of Bremen (Germany), a master’s degree in Biostatistics from the University of Hasselt (Belgium), and a bachelor’s degree in Mathematics from Eduardo Mondlane University (Mozambique).

He has extensive experience in data management, biostatistics, epidemiology, data science, machine learning, infectious disease modeling, clinical trial data quality, and regulatory compliance. He has led significant improvements in CISM’s data management systems, supported the design, analysis, and dissemination of numerous biomedical research projects, and contributed to the training of researchers in computational statistics, data science, and advanced data analysis at Eduardo Mondlane University and the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS) in Rwanda.

Event Summary

AMMnet hosted its first Lusophone Hackathon, organized by AMMnet's Lusophone Leadership Team and led by Arsénio Nhacolo. The hands-on, interactive session introduced participants to the principles of reproducible biomedical data analysis using R and Quarto — two open-source tools that enable transparent, automated, and easily shareable analytical workflows.

Participants learned how to organize a complete data analysis pipeline, integrate code, statistical results, and narrative text into a single dynamic document, and produce professional, reproducible reports. The session also covered best practices in project organization, documentation, and reproducible research — skills increasingly valued across biomedical research and public health contexts, including surveillance data, clinical trials, and epidemiological studies.

The session was designed for participants with basic to intermediate R knowledge and was conducted in Portuguese, marking an important step in expanding AMMnet's hackathon programming to Lusophone communities.
