We are inviting all AMMnet members to our next General Assembly, where we will present and vote on a proposed revision to AMMnet's bylaws — specifically, a change to the length of Board member terms.

During this one-hour session, Hannah will walk members through the proposed changes, explain why the Board is recommending them, and open the floor for questions before the member vote takes place. A brief summary of what will be covered — including what you will be asked to vote on and why it matters — is provided below. The problem with the 2-year term: AMMnet risks losing half its Board at once

  • What happens when terms are short and uncoordinated
  • In less than one year, over 1/2 the Board leaves, destabilizing our organization

Why does this happen?

  • Short terms create frequent clustering
    • With only 2 years between elections, there are fewer opportunities to spread departures out.
    • Members who join around the same time will always cycle out together, and the short cycle means this clustering recurs more frequently.
  • Term renewal only delays the problem — it does not fix it
    • Under 2+2, renewing all members simply shifts the exit wave 2 years forward.
    • Eventually, they all hit the 4-year maximum at the same time.
    • The structural clustering risk never disappears; it just recurs on a slightly longer cycle.

The 3-year term is better because it solves the clustering problem without any additional intervention. There are also other benefits to the 3-year term.

Our proposed move to 3+3 terms aligns directly with BoardSource's Recommended Governance Practices and reflects the structure used by a majority of high-performing nonprofits.

This change protects AMMnet's long-term governance health, ensuring we always have a stable, experienced, and well-supported Board.

Moderator

Nana Aba Williams (PhD) is a medicinal chemist and global health leader with more than 20 years of experience leading international health research programmes and knowledge networks. She leads MESA Alliance, the global malaria knowledge-to-action platform that maps the research and implementation landscape, synthesises emerging evidence and trends across the ecosystem, and translates that intelligence into actionable insights to inform policy and practice across the continuum from control to eradication. At the heart of her work is the conviction that progress toward a malaria-free future depends not only on the science being produced, but on whether it reaches the right people, at the right time, in forms they can act on, within an ecosystem that is driven by, and grounded in, the priorities of malaria-endemic countries.

Panelists

Dr. Aïssata Barry is a medical doctor with over a decade of experience in malaria research and public health in Burkina Faso. Her PhD research focused on Plasmodium falciparum reservoirs and transmission-stage epidemiology, generating important insights into infectiousness among semi-immune schoolchildren and the role of asymptomatic infections. In 2023, she was appointed Director of Planning, Surveillance, Monitoring & Evaluation and Research within Burkina Faso's National Malaria Elimination Programme. She was nominated for the GBD Emerging Researcher Award in 2022, is a TDR Clinical Research Leadership Fellow (2023), and a Science of Defeating Malaria Alumni (2024). Dr. Barry actively promotes women's leadership in global health and serves as co-chair of two Roll Back Malaria (RBM) Working Groups.

Dr. Debra Okeh is a global health physician and infectious disease epidemiologist with more than 15 years of experience. She is a 2023 alumna of the Nigeria Malaria Modelling Fellowship and a 2024 alumna of the Faculty Enrichment Program on Applied Malaria Modelling using EMOD. Her research focuses on applying modelling to strategic malaria planning using subnational data. At Corona Management Systems, she co-leads the team providing modelling and analytical support to Nigeria's National Malaria Elimination Programme, including technical assistance for the 2025 Nigeria Malaria Indicator Survey. Dr. Okeh is a member of the AMMnet Learning Committee, the Research Subgroup of the SMC Alliance, and serves as Assistant General Secretary of AMMnet Nigeria.

Metchanun Nawaphan (PhD) is a malaria modeller specialising in agent-based and compartmental approaches to guide disease control in resource-limited settings. She completed her PhD at the University of Bonn, in collaboration with the Institute for Disease Modeling (IDM), where she evaluated novel gene drive strategies for malaria elimination in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. With a background in pharmacy and advanced degrees in Clinical Research and Business Administration, she focuses on strengthening malaria modelling and research capacity across Southeast Asia, ensuring that scientific evidence is translated into policy and public health impact.

Professor Sheetal Silal is an internationally recognised leader in infectious disease modelling, with a particular focus on vector-borne diseases, vaccine-preventable diseases, and pandemic preparedness in Africa and globally. She is Director of the Modelling and Simulation Hub, Africa (MASHA) at the University of Cape Town and an Honorary Visiting Research Fellow in Tropical Disease Modelling at the University of Oxford. Her research develops and applies mathematical transmission models to understand disease dynamics, evaluate public health interventions, and support evidence-based decision-making. She chairs the World Health Organization's Immunization and Vaccines-related Implementation Research Advisory Committee and is a Gates Foundation Calestous Juma Science Leadership Fellow. Through these roles, she contributes to global immunization strategy and advances the use of modelling to strengthen health systems, endemic disease control, and pandemic preparedness.

Sylviane Miharisoa is an entomologist and PhD candidate with the Vector Atlas, working at the intersection of field-based vector biology and quantitative disease modelling. Her research applies Bayesian statistical modelling to insecticide resistance across Africa, linking multi-locus genotype and phenotype data with real-world intervention coverage—including insecticide-treated nets (ITNs) and indoor residual spraying (IRS)—to understand how resistance evolves under vector control pressure. Building on earlier field research on Aedes and Anopheles mosquitoes in Madagascar, she is committed to translating research into practical solutions that strengthen malaria vector control across the African continent.

Reproducible Pipeline for Biomedical Data Analysis using R & Quarto

Event Description

Join the first AMMnet Lusophone Hackathon, organised by the AMMnet Lusophone Leadership Team, and take part in a significant milestone for strengthening Portuguese-language expertise in malaria modelling and biomedical data science.

This practical and interactive session will introduce participants to the principles of reproducible biomedical data analysis using R and Quarto, two open-source tools that enable the creation of transparent, automated and easily shareable analytical workflows.

Throughout the Hackathon, participants will learn how to:

  • Organise a complete data analysis pipeline;
  • Integrate code, statistical results and text into a single dynamic document;
  • Produce professional, reproducible and easily shareable reports;
  • Apply best practices in project organisation, documentation and reproducible research, which are increasingly valued in biomedical research and public health.

Whether you work with surveillance data, clinical trials or epidemiological studies, this Hackathon will provide practical skills that can be applied immediately to improve the quality, transparency and reproducibility of your analyses.

The session is aimed at participants with basic to intermediate knowledge of R. Participants are expected to know how to run scripts in R and use RStudio. No prior experience with Quarto is required.

The session will be recorded and made available free of charge to all AMMnet members via the AMMnet Hackathons Blog.

What to Bring

Before the session, please ensure you have:

Quarto installed and working correctly

✅ Permission to install additional R packages, if necessary

About the Instructor

Arsénio Nhacolo, PhD is Director of Data Management and Statistical Analysis at the Manhiça Health Research Centre (CISM) in Mozambique. He holds a PhD in Medical Statistics from the University of Bremen (Germany), a Master’s degree in Biostatistics from Hasselt University (Belgium) and a Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics from Eduardo Mondlane University (Mozambique).

He has extensive experience in data management, biostatistics, epidemiology, data science, machine learning, infectious disease modelling, clinical trial data quality and regulatory compliance.

He has led significant improvements to CISM’s data management systems, supported the design, analysis and dissemination of numerous biomedical research projects, and contributed to the training of researchers in computational statistics, data science and advanced data analysis at Eduardo Mondlane University and the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS) in Rwanda.

About the presentation

The presentation focuses on the use of data for Subnational Tailoring (SNT) in Togo in 2025, an approach recommended by the WHO to tailor malaria control interventions to local circumstances rather than applying one-size-fits-all strategies. It sets out the context of SNT in Togo in 2025, as well as the types and sources of data used. It then details the processes of data validation and quality assurance, epidemiological stratification, and the prioritisation and deprioritisation of interventions, based on criteria such as incidence, access to care and coverage of historical interventions. It concludes with the key achievements of the 2025 exercise, the challenges encountered and the lessons learnt.

About the presenter

ALOWE David Kossi holds a Master’s degree in epidemiology, biostatistics and health research. He has been a member of the Epidemiological Surveillance and Research Unit at Togo’s National Malaria Control Programme (PNLP) since 2025. As part of the stratification process, he actively contributes to the sub-national adaptation (SNT) of malaria control interventions in Togo, with support from AHADI.

His main responsibilities include managing and analysing databases, as well as presenting methodological approaches and analysis results to the national SNT team. Passionate about using data to inform public health decisions, he applies his expertise to improve the planning and effectiveness of malaria control interventions in Togo.

Cost-effectiveness of a package to ensure safe prescription of 7-day high-dose primaquine for the radical cure of Plasmodium vivax in Indonesia

Presenter: Dr. Patrick Abraham

Can safer radical cure also be more cost-effective? Explore how health economics is informing evidence-based malaria policy and accelerating Plasmodium vivax elimination in Indonesia.

The radical cure of Plasmodium vivax requires treatment of the dormant liver stages with either primaquine or tafenoquine but is constrained by the risk of severe hemolysis in patients with glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency. A revised case-management package was designed to support safe radical cure in Indonesia, and included G6PD screening, targeting high dose primaquine and early clinical review. This presentation will explore the usefulness of health economics within malaria policymaking, while presenting results of this cost-effectiveness study in Indonesia.

About the Presenter

Dr Patrick Abraham is a Health Economist and Research Fellow at Melbourne Health Economics, within the School of Public Health. His field of research involves economic evaluations of malaria and other infectious diseases in low- and middle-income settings, as well as Australia. He specialises in cost-effectiveness analysis, productivity losses and understanding the holistic economic burden of infectious diseases on households and communities.

Postdoctoral Scholar Position Available in Infectious Disease Modeling at Stanford University

The Research Group of Dr. Nathan Lo at Stanford University seeks a skilled postdoctoral scholar to join our research team. Specializing in infectious disease epidemiology and public health modeling, we study neglected tropical diseases (e.g., schistosomiasis) and vaccine-preventable infections (e.g., measles, SARS-CoV-2, etc). Our research group is interested in the transmission of infectious diseases and the impact of surveillance and public health interventions with an overarching goal of informing public health policy. The postdoctoral scholar will have the opportunity to lead high impact research in infectious disease epidemiology and modeling of public health interventions with a focus on schistosomiasis.

We are recruiting for a postdoctoral scholar with interests in neglected tropical diseases (particularly schistosomiasis). Our NIH-funded project on schistosomiasis leverages diverse epidemiologic modeling approaches to evaluate precision surveillance and control strategies, with an emphasis on hotspot detection. This modeling work is well supported by large-scale, detailed primary datasets (>N=12,000) that have recently been collected, including survey-based, parasitological, serologic, and genomic data.

The Multilateral Initiative on Malaria Society (MIM) – 9th Pan African Malaria Conference (MIM) Call for Abstracts

The Multilateral Initiative on Malaria Society (MIM Society) was founded in 1997 to address the gap between Africa’s heavy malaria burden and limited research capacity. For 28+ years, MIM has united researchers, funders, and policymakers to strengthen malaria research and leadership across Africa.

Pandemics and Society Webinar Series

On July 31 at 12:00PM ET the Pandemic Center will host a webinar titled: Rising Temps, Rising Risks: Infectious Disease in the 2026 El Niño Year.

Climate variability, including El Niño-driven shifts in temperature and rainfall, are reshaping infectious disease risks by altering the environments where pathogens and vectors thrive. These changes can expand the geographic and seasonal patterns of outbreaks, challenging traditional approaches to surveillance and prevention. This year is progressing towards a historically severe El Niño event — a naturally occurring climate pattern characterized by the warming of surface waters in the central and eastern Pacific Ocean. These shifting oceanic temperatures trigger global weather disruptions that directly alter the trajectory of infectious disease risks. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) recently reported an 81% chance of a "very strong" El Niño by late autumn, with a 97% chance of it persisting into early spring 2027. What impact will this compounding climate event have on disease prevalence, and which regions are most vulnerable?

Assessment of the potential impact of the RTS,S/AS01 vaccine on malaria morbidity in Benin: a mathematical modelling approach

Presenter: Gouvide Jean Gbaguidi

The presentation details a mathematical modelling study led by Gouvidé Jean Gbaguidi to evaluate the public health benefits of introducing the RTS,S malaria vaccine in the Couffo province of Benin. Utilizing the EMOD simulation platform, the study calibrates historical malaria data from 2009 to 2021 and models various intervention scenarios to project outcomes through 2030.

The research highlights that malaria remains a significant burden in Benin, particularly among children under five, and argues that integrating the vaccine into existing strategies—such as insecticide-treated nets and intermittent preventive treatment—could substantially reduce transmission and morbidity in high-prevalence areas.

The results of the modelling demonstrate that all vaccination scenarios would significantly reduce clinical and severe malaria cases compared to a baseline of current interventions alone. The most intensive scenario, which combines high coverage with booster doses, was found to be the most effective, potentially averting approximately 11% of clinical cases and over 21% of severe malaria cases among children under five between 2024 and 2030. This hands-on AMMnet Hackathon provides guidance on building a fully interactive malaria dashboard using R Shiny and the modern bslib framework — from app structure and UI design to reactivity and web deployment. It provides a step by step instruction on building core blocks of Shiny development: constructing user interfaces with input controls and outputs, implementing reactive expressions so your dashboard responds dynamically to user interactions, and deploying the finished app to the web via shinyapps.io.

The session is based on realistic simulated malaria data modeled on real epidemiological patterns for Burkina Faso, giving practical experience on applying these tools in a malaria context.
